MADISON, Wis. -- Led by junior co-captain Laurie Nosbusch’s multi-goal effort, the Wisconsin women’s soccer team defeated Michigan State, 2-0, on Friday at the McClimon Complex.
Fast Facts | • Nosbusch notched two goals | • Johnson and Francel each tallied an assist | • UW finished with five shots on goal | |
“Anytime you score a goal, it’s fantastic,” Nosbusch said of her pair of goals. “But when you can do it against a team like Michigan State at the end of the season when you need every win that you can get, the feeling is just amazing.”
Nosbusch (Mequon, Wis.) put the Badgers (8-4-4, 5-1-2 Big Ten) on the scoreboard when she capitalized on a fumbled save by the MSU (9-4-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten) goalkeeper and pushed the ball into the goal in the 22nd minute. Fellow co-captain senior Taryn Francel (San Diego, Calif.) notched the helper to record her first assist of the season.
The first 45 minutes of play were even on each end, with both the Spartans and Badgers each tallying seven shots. MSU goalkeeper Jill Fliestra stopped two of the Badgers’ shots in the first half and Wisconsin redshirt junior Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) made two saves.
Nosbusch tallied her second goal of the game when she connected on a serve by sophomore Lindsey Johnson (Sussex) and placed a header into the upper-right corner of the net to seal the 2-0 victory in the 62nd minute.
The goal slated the junior co-captain’s seventh goal of the season and her 20th of her career. Nosbusch, who also notched seven goals during her freshman campaign, tied her career high for goals in a season.
“Laurie has great leadership,” Wilkins said. “She had two goals tonight, but she was also all over the field making plays. Everybody is behind her and they see what she does and hard she works for this team. I think that her unbelievable work ethic really sets the standard for everyone else on in this program. Everyone believes in her and what she is trying to do for this squad and that really shows on the field.”
Dalton finished with four saves after shutting out MSU’s leading goal scorer Laura Heyboer, who has 39 goals in her third collegiate season. With the shutout victory on Friday, the Badgers prevented Heyboer from becoming the Spartans’ all-time leading goal scorer with 40 goals.
“Anytime you get a result against Michigan State and especially with the two forwards they have in (Olivia) Stander and Heyboer, it’s a really great testimony to our team’s play,” Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said.
“It was definitely a collective effort tonight. We talked about getting wins in the Big Ten and getting more points and together we made that happen. I think that this builds the confidence of our team, especially coming off of the Penn State win. Obviously we are excited, but we are ready to move forward and face Michigan on Sunday.”
Flietstra finished with three saves for the Spartans, who led the contest with 18 shots to the Badgers’ 11.
With Francel and Johnson’s first assists of the season on Friday, the Badgers four defenders have now each tallied at least one assist this season. Defenders junior Meghan Flannery (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and freshman Catie Sessions (Woodbury, Minn.), who complete the Badgers’ defensive quartet, have recorded one and three assists, respectively.
The Cardinal and White return to the turf to host the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday at 1 p.m. Wisconsin will honor their two seniors, Francel and Darcy Riley (Akron, Ohio) prior to the match.
