MADISON, Wis. -- In the home opener at the Kohl Center, Wisconsin (2-1-0) defeated Alabama-Huntsville, 7-0, in front of 10,769 fans. The Badgers offense led the day, outshooting the Chargers 47-17 en route to the shutout victory.
The Badgers would take advantage of a five-minute major penalty to UAH's Sebastian Geoffrion, one of two brothers of former Badger Blake Geoffrion on the Alabama-Huntsville squad, in the first period, for which Geoffrion also received a game misconduct. On the resulting power play, Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) scored the game's first goal at 11:25 of the first period. Schultz received a pass from Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) and scored a one timer from the right faceoff circle.
With the Badgers still on the power play, Gardiner gave the Badgers a 2-0 lead on a one-timer, on assists from Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) and Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.). The Badgers outshot the Chargers 24-4 in the first period.
The Badgers would extend their lead in the second period, scoring three goals just one minute and 39 seconds apart. With the Badgers on the power play once again, John Ramage (St. Louis, Mo.) took a slap shot from the point that freshman Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) deflected into the net for his first career goal. Twenty-six seconds later, Sean Dolan (St. Louis) scored his first goal of the year on a deflection from the front of the crease.
Then at 8:42 of the second period, with the Badgers on another power play, Justin Schultz would net his second goal of the game on a slap shot from the point. For Schultz it marked his first career multi-goal game, and gave the Badgers their fourth power-play goal of the contest.
The Badger scoring continued in the third period, with Podge Turnbull (Heyward, Wis.) scoring on a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle. Craig Smith recorded his third assist of the game on the play, his career high game in points.
To cap off the scoring, freshman Gavin Hartzog (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded his first career goal on a wrist shot from in front of the net. Jefferson Dahl (Eau Claire, Wis.) got his first collegiate assist on the play.
Scott Gudmanson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made 17 saves for the Badgers to record his first victory and his first shutout of the season. For the Badgers it marked the first time since March 18-26, 2006 that the team recorded shutouts in consecutive games. That year the Badgers had three straight shutouts, coming in the third place game of the Final Five and then the first two games of the NCAA tournament.
Clarke Saunders took the loss for Alabama-Huntsville, allowing five goals. John Griggs replaced him in the second period and allowed the final two goals.
For the Badgers, Smith and Gardiner recorded three points, while Schultz, Zengerle, and Turnbull had two points apiece.
The Badgers finished the game 4-for-7 on the power play, recording 17 shots with the man-advantage. They held the Chargers to 0-for-5 on the power play, including 1:25 of 5-on-3 during the second period. This was the first time the Badgers scored four power-play goals since Dec. 5, 2009 against Michigan Tech.
The Badgers are back home on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Kohl Center against Alabama-Huntsville (1-2-0).
