MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin hosted the U.S. Under-18 team at the Kohl Center this Saturday night, defeating the team of future college standouts 7-1 in an exhibition game.

Wisconsin took the lead midway through the first period when Jordy Murray scored on a wide-open net 10:50 into the period. Senior captain Blake Geoffrion drew USA’s goalkeeper out of the net toward the boards and crossed the puck to Murray who was just outside the crease on the opposite side. Derek Lee received the second assist on the play.

Geoffrion went on to score two goals of his own in the second period. The captain expanded UW’s lead to 2-0 early in the period, beating Jack Campbell with a wrist shot from the blue line after picking up a deflected shot at 16:14. Justin Schultz picked up an assist on the power play goal.

The Badgers moved to 3-0 with 3:44 left in the period. Geoffrion slung it past Campbell from the edge of the crease directly in front of the net on a power play off a pass from Michael Davies from behind the net. Lee was credited with the second assist on UW’s third goal.

Wisconsin tallied four more goals in the third period. Davies founds the net 7:11 into the third with a close-range goal after a slap shot from Craig Johnson was deflected off GK’s pads. Matt Thurber also received an assist.

The U.S. Under-18 team evaded a shutout moments after Davies’s goal, when Bryan Rust pushed the puck under Brett Bennett’s pads in a moment of confusion at the UW net. Luke Moffatt and Adam Clendening were given the assists on the USA goal.

Wisconsin responded with three more goals before the game’s end. Davies scored his second goal of the night with 7:55 left, punching it in after Ben Street put the puck into the mix in front of the net. Thurber received the second assist.
Street and Davies flipped roles when Davies drew the keeper out of the net to cross the puck to Street, who scored on the open net with 4:47 left. Ryan McDonagh was credited with an assist as well.

John Mitchell secured a piece of the win seconds before the end of the game, sealing Wisconsin’s 7-1 win on a rebound goal with 10.8 seconds left in the game. Brendan Smith and Aaron Bendickson gave the assists.

Wisconsin went 2-4 on the power play while USA went 0-3. Bennett saved 15 shots on goal while Campbell saved 25 and USA’s substitute goalkeeper Jordan Lehr saved two shots.
