Colorado Springs, Colo.--The Wisconsin men's hockey team (13-6-3, 9-5-2 WCHA) fell behind 4-1 after one period, a margin that proved too large to overcome in a 6-5 loss to the Colorado College Tigers (13-8-3, 9-6-3 WCHA) on Saturday. The loss snapped the UW's season-best, seven-game unbeaten streak as the Badgers fell for the first time since Nov. 28.
Colorado College returned the favor from last night by scoring within the game's first minute. Freshman forward Andrew Hamburg tipped in a shot in front of the net, putting the Tigers on top just 55 seconds into the game.
The Tigers soon struck again, this time, at the 1:48 mark of the first. A breakdown in front of the Badger goal, combined with some nice passing Brian McMillin put CC on top, 2-0.
Just over a minute later, the Badgers got one back. On a breakaway, Street cashed in his eighth goal of the season. Leading the Badgers up the ice, senior forward Michael Davies (St. Louis) found an open Street in the CC defense. From there, he finished the scoring sequence with a wrister to goaltender Joe Howe's blocker side. Junior defenseman Brendan Smith (Mimico, Ontario) also contributed an assist on the play. The score was now 2-1, favoring the Tigers.
With 5:42 remaining in the first, CC regained its two-goal advantage. McMillin punched in his own rebound through a mob of Badgers and Tigers to put Colorado College on top, 3-1.
Just nine seconds later, Hamburg scored his second goal of the game for CC on a rebound after the Tigers won a faceooff in the UW end. That made the score 4-1 in favor of the Tigers and that was the end of the night for junior goaltender Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta).
At the first period's end, the Badgers were skating with a 4-1 disadvantage. UW was also outshot in the period, 19-9.
Early in the second period, senior tri-captain Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) inched Wisconsin closer after notching his team-high 15th goal. After junior defenseman Cody Goloubef (Oakville, Ontario) advanced the puck to freshman forward Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.), Geoffrion was able to gain control of the puck and rip a shot past Howe. At the 16:26 mark of the second period, the Badgers were trailing the Tigers, 4-2.
However, CC took back its three-goal lead less than three minutes later. This time, junior forward Tyler Johnson capitalized on an errant pass around the UW goal, intercepting the puck and scoring unassisted for the Tigers.
That would be all of the scoring in the second period. The Tigers still were outshooting the Badgers, 29-23, overall, but UW outshot CC, 14-10, in the period.
Just less than four minutes into the final period, sophomore forward Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) clawed the Badgers closer again with his seventh goal of the season. Brendan Smith started the scoring sequence when he found sophomore forward Derek Stepan (Hastings, Minn.) up the ice. Stepan passed the puck off to Murray for a back-hander. The score now read 5-3 in favor of Colorado College.
The Badgers looked to continue the momentum, but with just under six minutes remaining in the game, CC regained its three-goal lead once again. This time, senior forward Bill Sweatt found the back of the net for the Tigers after a Badger defenseman failed to kick a wrap-around rebound from the slot. That made it a 6-3 contest.
Street later scored his second goal of the game with 2:08 remaining in the contest. After a loose puck got into his control, he was able to glide it to the back of the net, decreasing the UW deficit to 6-4. Geoffrion and Davies assisted the scoring sequence.
With 1.4 seconds left and its goalie pulled, UW scored its last goal. Stepan's shot from high along the boards was redirected by Davies and past CC goaltender Joe Howe to make it a 6-5 contest. Goloubef contributed his second assist of the game in the score.
Geoffrion wound up for a slap shot on the ensuing center-ice faceoff and actually got the puck on net, but Howe made the easy stop to seal the victory. When the final horn sounded, the Tigers topped the Badgers, 6-5.
Neither team was able to score on the power play. And, when all was said and done, UW outshot CC, 40-34.
Junior goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) absorbed the loss with 15 saves on 17 shots in the relief effort and fell to 6-4-0. Tiger goaltender Joe Howe's record climbed to 12-7-3 on the season with 35 saves.
The No. 3 Badger men get back into action next weekend, as they welcome the No. 1 Denver Pioneers onto the Kohl Center ice Friday and Saturday night. The puck drops at 7 p.m. for both games.
