MADISON, Wis. -- Despite outshooting the Huskies, 56-32, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team fell to St. Cloud State, 4-2, to split the teams’ WCHA series Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Arena.
After a scoreless first period in game one of the series, the first 20 minutes of game two provided fans with plenty of excitement.
With 10:57 left in the period, Wisconsin (8-5-1, 6-4-0 WCHA) sophomore Brooke Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.) continued to display her scoring abilities and gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
Junior Malee Windmeier (Champlin, Minn.) passed the puck from alongside the boards up to freshman Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) on the far boards. Decker made a move past an SCSU player, advancing the puck near the goal line and centered it to Ammerman, who found room over the SCSU goaltender Ashley Nixon’s shoulder.
Ammerman’s goal extended her point streak to 11 games (11 goals, 6 assists).
At the 12:14 mark, SCSU (5-10-0, 4-7-0 WCHA) quickly capitalized on the man advantage when Holly Roberts won a faceoff in Badgers territory and sent the puck to Meaghan Pezon. Pezon passed it to Felicia Nelson, who found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
With 1:58 left in the first frame, sophomore Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, Ontario) recorded UW’s second short-handed goal of the season when she made the score 2-1 with a breakaway goal. The breakaway started at the UW blue line and, despite three Huskies chasing her the entire way down the ice, Prevost stayed ahead and backhanded the puck past Nixon to record her first goal since Jan. 23, 2009.
The last time Prevost found the back of the net was when UW defeated SCSU 5-1 at the National Hockey Arena.
Although UW outshot the Huskies 21-10 in the second period, SCSU was the only team to convert in the second frame.
At the 7:06 mark, St. Cloud tied the game when Caitlyn Hogan followed up on her own shot and pushed the puck past Wisconsin’s freshman goaltender, Becca Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.), to even the score at 2-2.
With 3:23 left in the third frame, SCSU’s Pezon prevailed on a breakaway to give the Huskies the 3-2 lead. Brittany Toor notched the assist on the score.
While on the power play, Pezon recorded her second goal of the game at the 18:47 mark to give the Huskies the 4-2 victory and split the series at 1-1. Danielle Hirsch and Felicia Nelson tallied the first and secondary assists.
SCSU went 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Badgers finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Ruegsegger finished with 28 saves for the Badgers, and Nixon recorded 54 saves in net for the Huskies.
The Badgers now head to the East Coast to face Hockey East opponent Providence from Nov. 27-28. The puck drops each night at 6 p.m. (CT).
