Fifth-seeded Marek Michalicka and second-seeded Moritz Baumann advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles after the second day of play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
After two singles wins, Michalicka faced his most difficult match of the tournament. The senior defeated No. 12-seed Matt Allare of Ohio State after a tight 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-5 three-setter. He will face Casey Watt of North Dakota in the quarterfinal match Sunday.
Baumann cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jacob Straus of Marquette which also placed him in the quarters. To advance to the semis, Baumann must overcome No. 13-ranked Marek Czerwinski of Illinois.
After winning his first two singles matches, No. 14-seeded Patrick Pohlmann lost 6-1, 6-2 to No. 3-ranked Dennis Nevolo of Illinois in the round of 16.
Senior Michael Dierberger defeated Skip Span of Illinois State 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation bracket yesterday.
On the doubles side, No. 1-ranked Baumann-Michalicka advanced to the quarterfinals after easily defeating No. 11-seed Medan-Straus of Marquette in an 8-2 match.
The duo of Billy Bertha and Chris Freeman lost 8-2 in the round of 32 to Allare-Uzawa of Ohio State University.
Dierberger-Pohlmann fell to Latosinsky-Necajevs of the University of Detroit Mercy 8-5 in the round of 32.
