MADISON, Wis. -
In front of a crowd of 13,126 Saturday night in the Kohl Center, the Badger men's hockey team tied the Colorado College Tigers in their final game of the weekend. This moves the Badgers' record to 0-1-1 on the season.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead by scoring at the 13:14 mark of the first period. Penalties by junior defenseman Ryan McDonagh (Arden Hills, Minn.) and junior defenseman Cody Goloubef (Oakville, Ontario) gave CC a two-man advantage for 1:30. The Tigers capitalized with just nine seconds left on the 5-on-3 when Nate Prosser found room past UW goaltender Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta).
The scoring stayed stagnant for the rest of the period and all of the second--barely. Junior right wing Podge Turnbull (Hayward, Wis.) and sophomore defenseman Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) both saw shot attempts ping the post and rattle out. Heading into the third period, the score read 1-0, in favor of the Tigers.
It did not take the Badgers long to even the match in the third period, and it was done in a freshman-to-senior fashion. After senior center Ben Street (Coquitlam, British Columbia) saw his breakaway goal rattle off of the side bar and out, he patiently waited in the corner on the goal line for an assist from freshman defenseman John Ramage (St. Louis). Ramage gained possession of the puck along the boards and found Street down the boards at the goal line. The tri-captain then shot from there, banking the puck off CC goalie Joe Howe and into the net. This was Street's first goal of the 2009-10 season, and Ramage's first point as a Badger.
As the final horn signaled the end of regulation, the score was locked at one. After a scoreless overtime in which the Badgers were outshot 5-4, the teams skated a scoreless overtime and the game finished 1-1.
Badger goalie Gudmandson compiled 31 saves in his first start of the 2009-10 season, making his record 0-0-1. CC goaltender Joe Howe stopped 26 shots for the Tigers, moving his record to 2-0-1. The Badgers failed to capitalize on the power play, as they were 0-5 in the game. Power-play goals only advantaged the Tigers, as they were 1-7 on the night.
The men take the ice again next Friday as they visit the Minnesota State Mavericks in Mankato, Minn. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
