Despite outshooting Bemidji State 35-25, Wisconsin (1-2-0, 1-2-0) dropped its second game of the season Saturday night at the Hodgins-Berardo Arena in Coleraine, Minn., on the Badgers’ first road trip of the season. The Beavers (1-2-0, 1-0-0) only needed one goal to pick up their first win of the season and only the second ever against Wisconsin.
The all-time series moves to 39-2-2 in favor of Wisconsin after the loss, marking Bemidji State’s first win over the Badgers since Dec. 9, 2001.
Becca Ruegsegger got the start in the net for Wisconsin, with 25 saves in her second collegiate start. Wisconsin had a number of scoring opportunities, but was unable to get it past BSU’s Zuzana Tomcikova who had 35 saves in her first shutout of the season and her fourth career shutout.
The Beavers got the lone goal of the night at the 13:52 mark in the second period. Kim Lieder took a hard shot from the blue line that went wide right. Her shot hit off the end boards and bounced back to Annie Bauerfeld who put it in from beyond the left side of the goal crease.
Junior Geena Prough, senior Kyla Sanders and sophomore Brooke Ammerman had six shots apiece to lead the Badger effort.
Both teams were scoreless on the power play as Wisconsin went 0-3 and Bemidji State went 0-2.
The Badgers now head to Bemidji, Minn., for the series finale tomorrow at the John Glas Fieldhouse at 4 p.m.
