
Vetter shuts out Wildcats to complete the sweep

Senior Jessie Vetter had 18 saves to get her fifth shutout of the year and 31st career shutout to break the NCAA record as the Badgers swept New Hampshire (7-3-3, 3-1-2 HE) Saturday afternoon 2-0. Vetter broke New Hampshire goalie Melissa Bourdon's previous 30 career shutout record in 2004-07. Wisconsin (14-0-2, 8-0-2 WCHA) remains unbeaten with the non-conference two-game sweep at the Fort Myers Skatium in Fort Myers, Fla. Senior Erika Lawler and sophomore Hilary Knight scored the Badgers two goals while on the power play.
After the Badgers 8-2 win on Friday night, the third-ranked Wildcats came out ready to play. The first period was scoreless but Wisconsin just barely outshot New Hampshire 7-5.
Wisconsin's first goal, and eventual game-winner came at the 10:07 mark in the second period. Lawler backhanded the puck past UNH's Kayley Herman from the bottom of the near circle off a pass from the point. Junior Meghan Duggan and Jasmine Giles were on the assists as Lawler netted her sixth goal of the season.
Knight put the game away in the third period with her 18th goal of the season. From the low slot Knight beat Herman to the top shelf at 14:38. New Hampshire had one final attempt to catch the Badgers when they pulled their goalie just under two minutes. The Badgers defense held strong as the Wildcats came up unsuccessful.
Herman had 19 saves on the game as the Badgers outshot the Wildcats 21-18. Wisconsin went 2-6 on the power play and New Hampshire went 0-7.
Lawler, Knight and Duggan all increased their point-scoring streak to four games after this weekend.
Wisconsin will remain in Fort Myers, Fla. until Sunday where Head Coach Mark Johnson and some UW players will hold a kids clinic at the Skatium. The Badgers will return home next weekend as they host Minnesota State Nov. 28-30 at the Kohl Center..
