November 15, 2008 | Women's Hockey
The Wisconsin women's hockey team remains unbeaten as they skated past North Dakota 5-1 Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. Senior Jessie Vetter had 24 saves, making many critical stops for the Badgers. Four different Badgers scored increasing their record to 11-0-2 and 7-0-2 in the WCHA. North Dakota, who was off to their best start ever, fell to 7-3-1 and 4-2-1 in conference play.
The Badgers struck first late in the first period with a goal from freshman Brooke Ammerman for her 13th goal of the year. Olivia Jakiel moved the puck out of the zone where Mallory Deluce dumped it to Ammerman at the Badgers blue line. Ammerman finished from the high slot sending the puck past UND's Brittany Kirkham. The first two periods were fairly clean with only one Badger penalty that was successfully killed off.
With Vetter denying every Sioux opportunity, the Badgers offense extended their lead 3-0 in the second period. The Sioux offense showed up with several breakaway opportunities that Vetter never let up on.
Freshman Carolyne Prevost snuck the puck past Kirkham's left pad from just outside the goal crease only 1:30 into the second period. Deluce was credited with her second assist of the day and Meghan Duggan also earned the assist.
Senior Angie Keseley scored in the second at 8:36 again from just beyond the crease, with Hilary Knight and Erika Lawler on the assists.
The Badgers took advantage of their first power-play opportunity of the day early in the third period. Jasmine Giles scored from the high-slot 3:10 into the third. Knight and Duggan were each credited with their second assist of the day. On another Wisconsin power-play, Giles netted her second goal of the game less than nine minutes after her previous goal.
Susanne Fellner of North Dakota scored on the power play 14:45 in the third period to avoid the shut out. The third period was not so clean with six penalties between the two teams. The Badgers were 2-4 on the power play and North Dakota went 1-3. UND's Kirkham had 25 saves for the Sioux.
Wisconsin will close out the series with North Dakota Sunday at 2:07 p.m. at the Engelstad Arena.
