University of Wisconsin swimming coach Eric Hansen announced that the team has added two more recruits to complete the 2006-07 freshman class. Sprinter Daniel Kieler of Platteville, Wis., and diver Dan Smith of Rockford, Mich., will join the team for the 2006-07 season.
'Dan Smith and Daniel Kieler round out our biggest freshmen class we've ever had,' Hansen said. 'With 25 incoming athletes for next season, we look forward to this group developing and becoming a strong core for years to come.'
Kieler, a 6-foot sprinter from Platteville High School, was a state champion in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events last spring. He earned all-state honors in five events and was an All-American Honorable Mention in the 200 medley relay and 50 free last year as a senior. He also holds the school record in four events.
Kieler lettered four times in swimming and also competed in cross country, golf and track in high school.
Smith, a diver from Rockford High School, was the 2005 Michigan Diver of the Year after winning the Division 1 state championship. He earned All-America honors twice in his high school career and set his school's pool and varsity record for 6-dive and 11-dive score. He also achieved qualifying scores for the US Diving Nationals and the AAU Diving Nationals.
Along with diving, Smith also lettered four times in track and field.
