The Wisconsin women's soccer team, which played a school-record seven overtime games last year, played its first overtime game of the season Friday afternoon. The Badgers tied the Arizona Wildcats, 1-1, at the Cyclone Classic in Ames, Iowa.
The Badgers (1-1-1) took an early lead in the eighth minute on senior co-captain Lauren Schmidt's second goal of the year. Junior defender Bethany Heine nailed a free kick and Schmidt headed it home for the score.
'We scored first on a very nice set play,' coach Dean Duerst said. 'Lauren just really got up, attacked the ball well and headed it home past the keeper.'
Schmidt tallied the game-winner last week against USC on a header and leads the Badgers this season with two goals.
'She's very dangerous on headers and she's creating some things for herself,' Duerst said.
Ten minutes later at 17:15, Arizona (2-0-1) tied the game to close the scoring for the half and the game. Wildcats rookie Mallory Miller scored her first collegiate goal, heading the ball past UW keeper Kelly Conway.
'Credit them,' Duerst said. 'They played with a lot of fight and spirit. They hung in there and I thought that it was our game to win and we just didn't play a full 90 minute game.'
The Badgers conclude action at the Cyclone Classic Sunday when they face host Iowa State. Wisconsin takes on the Cyclones at 1 p.m.
