Badger Youth Defies Davidson
September 15, 2002 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team, led by frosh Marisa Brown, defeated Davidson, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in the Rocky Rococo Classic at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Brown scored her first collegiate goal in the opening half to tie the game at 1-1, assisted on the game-winner and added an insurance goal for the Badgers (3-2-1) in the second stanza.
'Today, she showed experienced collegiate performance, ' said coach Dean Duerst of Brown. 'The sharpness in her runs, composure in front of goal'she kept possession probably 90 percent of the time. It 's one of those performances that she's wanted to have. She has been very close in other games.'
Davidson took an early lead in the 12th minute after a Badger foul set up a penalty kick. Senior co-captain Heather Maloney took the kick and sent it past UW 's keeper Kelly Conway to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
The Badgers responded two minutes later as Jenny Kundert brought the ball in front of the net and fed it to Brown. Brown's first shot was stopped, but she sent the rebound in past a diving Sarah Hobart for her first goal as a Badger.
In the 26th minute, a trio of rookies provided the game-winning goal. Katy Lindenmuth, who scored a goal in the Red/White scrimmage this year, notched her first collegiate goal for the Badgers. Carolyn Nosbusch and Brown assisted on the goal.
A one-goal game coming out of the break, Brown gave the Badgers some breathing room in the 54th minute. Sophomore Sarah Capel brought the ball up the right side and sent a long pass over the middle of the field to a crossing Brown. Brown took the pass and sent it home from the left side.
Kundert, who tallied two assists and 11 shots on the weekend, was honored as the 2002 Rocky Rococo Classic Offensive MVP, her second-straight tournament MVP award. Kundert was named MVP of the Cyclone Classic last week. Kundert, Lauren Schmidt and Brooke Vanderby were named to the Rocky Rococo All-Tournament team.
'I'm very confident in this team,' Duerst said. 'Day in and day out they're giving a great effort. It was important to come out and get a victory here and continue to move on in the direction we want to which is complete two wins in a row and get on a streak.'
The Badgers travel to Marquette Tuesday, before kicking off the Big Ten season on the road next weekend. UW faces Indiana and Purdue on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
