December 01, 2002 | Women's Hockey
Four Badgers scored goals and Wisconsin held its opponent scoreless for the second consecutive series finale in a 4-0 victory over Minnesota State Sunday at the Kohl Center.
After a scoreless opening period, Nicole Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) put the Badgers on the board with her fifth goal of the season at 8:15. Molly Engstrom 's (Siren, Wis.) point shot sailed wide of the goal, but Jackie Friesen (Regina Saskatchewan) recovered the puck behind the MSU goal and skated out front. Friesen centered, but the puck bounce off a Maverick skate and out to a charging Uliasz. The sophomore found room past MSU goaltender Shari Vogt and gave the UW a 1-0 lead.
Kathy Devereaux (Seaforth, Ontario) made it a 2-0 game with an unassisted score at 13:02. The senior intercepted an MSU clearing attempt, skated down the left side of the Maverick defense and found room between Vogt's legs for her second score of the year.
Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) also scored her second of the season in the second period with a goal at 17:07. Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ontario) made a diagonal pass to Sharon Cole (Bloomington, Minn.) from the right of Vogt to the opposite face-off circle. Cole fired and clanked the post, but Sikich reached behind Vogt and poked home the rebound for the goal.
Engstrom finished off the scoring late in the third period with her first of the season. Grace Hutchins (Winnetka, Ill.) passed back to the sophomore at the point, who found the net with a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle. Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) earned her first point of the year on the game that came at 15:15 of the third.
MacMillan earned her second consecutive series finale shutout with 24 saves. She improved to 9-4-3 with the victory. Vogt made 38 saves, but fell to 2-9-0.
Wisconsin (9-4-3, 3-4-3 WCHA) closes its 2002 portion of the 2002 '03 season next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 and 7 at Bemidji State. The Badgers, fourth in the WCHA, look to climb into third place before their month-long break.
