Penney Named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week
December 25, 2001 | Men's Basketball
Junior guard Kirk Penney was named co-Big Ten Player of the Week for his performance against Marquette last Saturday. Penney scored a career-high 33 points on 13-17 shooting (including 5-6 from three-point range) as Wisconsin upset the 14th-ranked Golden Eagles 86-73. It is Penney's first Player of the Week honor and he becomes the first Badger to receive the award since Roy Boone on Dec. 18, 2000.
Penney's 33 points are the most by a Big Ten player this season and the highest total for a Badger since Michael Finley scored 36 points against Missouri in the second round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament. It was also the highest total for a UW player in the 108-game series against Marquette. Penney tied a career high with five three-pointers and his 5-6 (.833) shooting from beyond the arc ties him for second on the UW single-game list.
Penney and the Badgers are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 27 when they travel to Milwaukee to take on UWM. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
