The Wisconsin women's soccer team lost to Illinois, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers fall to 4-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 Big Ten.
'Our players cannot lose heart, they need to keep their mentality tough,' coach Dean Duerst said. 'We played with guts today and it's good to see that we can come out and play strong.'
Illinois (6-4, 4-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half. Colleen Joyce skipped the ball past UW goaltender Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) to give the Illini a goal advantage 23 minutes into the game.
The Badgers responded with three minutes left in the first half. Marla Froelich (Iowa City, Iowa) tied the game for the Badgers with the first goal of her UW career. Playing in just her fifth game as a Badger, Froelich scored from a Natalie Roedler (Mendota Heights, Minn.) pass.
'[Froelich] has worked very hard and has shown good effort and good things in practice,' Duerst said. 'She's a player that we felt she deserved some playing time and she's come on and done some good things.'
At the 75-minute mark, Tara Schuling scored the game winner for the Illini. Hollie Schurr, who registered helpers on both UI goals, assisted Schuling.
Conway anchored a tough Badger defense, making 15 saves on the afternoon. The junior keeper stopped eight shots in the first half and seven shots in the second half.
