Women's Soccer Falls to No. 18 Marquette
October 28, 2001 | Women's Soccer
It was deja vu all over again for the Wisconsin women's soccer team as it missed a prime opportunity in the first half against No. 18 Marquette and lost its final home game of the season, 2-0, at the McClimon Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Six seniors, including Shelby Johnson (Madison, Wis.), Kelly Kundert (Madison, Wis.), Wynter Pero (Chicago Heights, Ill.), Natalie Roedler (Mendota Heights, Minn.), Allie Rogosheske (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Jodi Zilinski (Brookfield, Wis.) played in their final home game for the Badgers Sunday.
'It was emotional for me because we've spent a lot of time together as a group,' coach Dean Duerst said. 'Unfortunately they had a frustrating year overall, but that's what life's about though 'that's how seasons go sometimes. You have to look at the whole picture for them; they've been a part of two teams that finished second in the Big Ten ' two teams that have gone into the second round of the NCAAs. They've been a part of a winning program.'
The Badgers rallied behind their senior keeper Zilinski, who made the first start of her career on Senior Day and played the entire first half. UW's defense clamped down on the Golden Eagles in the first half, limiting MU to just one shot.
'She was excited; the team was confident in her,' said Duerst of Zilinski. 'She played well, she did good things and made good decisions. That's what you want your keepers to be able to do.'
The Badgers tallied eight shots in the first half and for the second straight game, junior Lauren Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wis.) was denied by the cross bar as the Badgers were denied a goal in another close contest.
'That's a pretty good indication of how this season has gone,' Duerst said.
Locked up at halftime, 0-0, the Badgers entered the second half with junior Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) in the net. Marquette would go up at 77:32 on a goal by Anne Ioder out in front. The Golden Eagles tallied their second goal on a penalty kick taken by Kristen Jensen.
The Badgers (4-10-3) conclude their 2001 season next weekend on the road. Wisconsin faces Illinois State Friday at 3 p.m. and St. Louis on Sunday at 1 p.m.
