Women's Soccer Falls to Northwestern in OT
October 26, 2001 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team broke a school record Friday night, playing in its seventh overtime game this season. The Badgers, who played in six overtime games in 1995 and 1996, lost to the Northwestern Wildcats, 1-0, in their final Big Ten contest of the 2001 campaign at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
In the story of their season, the Badgers (4-9-3 overall, 1-7-2 Big Ten) had a prime opportunity to score in the first half, but a Lauren Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wis.) shot banged off the cross bar and back into play. Frosh Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) fired two quick shots after Schmidt's blast, but both attempts were blocked by the NU defense.
UW outshot NU 7-4 in the first half while the Wildcats' (5-9-1, 3-6-1) earned more corner kicks, 5-3, but both teams played evenly which resulted in a 0-0 score at the half. The Badgers outshot the Wildcats' again in the second half, 6-4, but couldn't capitalize.
Entering the overtime period, the Badgers held a 13-8 advantage in shots, but the Wildcats' next shot would end the extra period and the game. Thirty seconds into the Badgers' seventh overtime period of the year, Ashleigh Garmon lifted the Wildcats' past Wisconsin.
The Kundert sisters returned to action for UW Friday night after being out of the lineup for a portion of the season due to injuries. And the siblings almost connected for a goal in the second half. Kelly Kundert (Madison, Wis.) fired a pass to sister Jenny, but the NU defense and the Wildcats' keeper, Susan McCreery, broke up the play. Kelly Kundert had not played since the Oct. 5 Iowa game, in which she scored the third goal in a 3-1 UW win. Younger sister Jenny Kundert (Madison, Wis.) had a longer layoff, last playing in the Badgers' Sept. 28 tie versus Michigan State.
Kelly Kundert will join fellow seniors Allie Rogosheske, Natalie Roedler, Shelby Johnson, Jodi Zilinski and Wynter Pero for Senior Day on Sunday when the eldest class will play its final home game for the Badgers. Wisconsin faces No. 18 Marquette Sunday at 3 p.m at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
