Women's Soccer Falls to Minnesota in OT
October 14, 2001 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 2-1 in overtime, Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Soccer Complex. It is the third-straight loss for the Badgers and their sixth loss this season decided by a single goal.
Wisconsin came out strong, taking control of the game in the first half. The Badgers spent most of the first session in Minnesota's zone and outshot UM, 7-3. However, both teams managed only one shot on net in the first half and entered the break in a scoreless tie.
The Badgers stepped up their play in the second half, outshooting the Gophers 12-3 and earning seven corner kicks to Goldy's zero. At the 55-minute mark, opportunity knocked for the Badgers when freshman Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) dribbled in toward the Gophers' keeper and was taken down by a defender. The foul set up a penalty kick for the Badgers and junior Lauren Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wis.) delivered for UW, scoring her first goal of the year to put Wisconsin on the board.
'Up 1-0, we had control of the game,' coach Dean Duerst said.
In the game, UW tallied 22 shots and 10 corner kicks to Minnesota 's seven shots and one corner. However, Minnesota would successfully strike at the 73-minute mark. Rachael Roth received the ball from Alison Rackley and was off running on a breakaway. Roth slipped the ball past UW goalkeeper Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) to tie the game up at 1-1.
As the game entered overtime, ominous clouds to the north began closing in on McClimon. With nine minutes left in overtime, the game was delayed by lightning in the area. The game resumed 30 minutes later.
With four minutes left in overtime, Roth got involved in another Gopher score, this time assisting Samantha Meyers. Roth fired the ball into a crowd in front of the Badger net and Meyers headed the ball past Conway.
'Through adversity, we must somehow find success,' Duerst said. 'Through adversity we must learn from our mistakes.'
Wisconsin (4-7-2, 1-5-1 Big Ten) travels to Penn State and Ohio State next weekend. The Badgers take on the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions on Oct. 19 and the Buckeyes on Oct. 21.
