Badgers collect first series sweep after shutout against St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team shut out St. Lawrence, 6-0, to earn a series sweep in the season opener at Appleton Arena.
The Badgers (2-0-0) put up four in the second period to solidify the victory over the Saints (0-2-0).
Alternate Captain Maggie Scannell put the Badgers on the board just four minutes into UW's contest against the Saints. Scannell received the puck from Adéla Šapovalivová to make it 1-0.
Freshman Haley Box collected her first NCAA career goal to open the second period. Box's goal was assisted by fellow rookie Maddy Kimbrel.
After finding another pass from Šapovalivová, Scannell tallied another for the Badgers, making it 3-0.
Captain Kelly Gorbatenko then found two back-to-back goals during the second period to give Wisconsin a 5-0 lead. Gorbatenko's first goal was assisted by Cassie Hall, and the second by both Hall and Laney Potter.
The third period remained scoreless until Cassie Hall tipped it in off a Gorbatenko pass with three minutes remaining in the game.
Goaltender Rhyah Stewart stopped all 15 of the shots she faced for her first career shutout.

With Saturday's win, Wisconsin is now 6-1-0 in the all-time series against St. Lawrence with a five-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 7, 2003.

For the 22nd time in program history and the fourth year in a row, UW has started its season off with a sweep.

Wisconsin captain Kelly Gorbatenko enjoyed a career-best five-point weekend with four goals and an assist.

The Badgers outshot the Saints 37-15.
