Men’s soccer wraps up non-conference slate with two matches

Badgers welcome Marquette for Monday Night Football, travel to No. 3 Portland
MADISON, Wis. - The No. 23 Wisconsin men's soccer team (3-0-0) welcomes the Marquette Golden Eagles (2-0-1) to the McClimon Soccer Complex on Monday, August 31. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT. The Badgers will also travel to the West Coast for a match on Sept. 5 against the No. 3 Portland Pilots (0-1-1). Saturday night kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CT.
Here are five things to know before this week's matches.
1 – PASSED THE TEST – The men's soccer team improved to 3-0-0 and earned its first road victory after defeating Western Michigan, 1-0, on Thursday. The game's lone goal came in the final seconds of the first half from senior transfer Joaquin Torres. The Badgers held the lead over the next 45 minutes to keep their season record perfect. UW has opened the season with three shutouts for the seventh time in program history, most recently doing so in 2023.
2 – DOMINANT DEFENSE – While the Badgers' offense stole the spotlight in their first two games, it was Wisconsin's defense that made the difference in Thursday's 1-0 victory over the Broncos. Goalkeeper Judewellin Michel faced eight shots, including two on target, but stopped both attempts to preserve his third consecutive shutout. Defender Joaquin Torres scored his first goal as a Badger, providing the game-winner and bringing his season point total to three.
3 – BATTLE OF I-94 – In 47 games played against Marquette, Wisconsin holds a 23-16-8 edge. The in-state rivals last met in 2023 when the Golden Eagles earned a 3-1 victory over the Badgers. Marquette is off to a strong start this season, earning wins over Saint Mary's (CA) and Northern Illinois, while recording a draw against Oakland. Freshman forward Tomiwa Adewumi is leading the charge offensively with nine points (4 goals, 1 assist) in three games played for the Golden Eagles. Junior Cameron Simpson has played every minute in goal, posting a 1.33 goals against average and one shutout.
4 – SCOUTING THE PILOTS – UW trails 1-4-2 in the all-time series against Portland, with its lone win occurring during the 1995 National Championship season. Last year the Pilots earned a 1-0 victory in Madison. Portland recorded a scoreless draw against California and a 4-2 loss against No. 11 and defending NCAA-champion Washington so far this season. Miguel-Angel Hernandez has made both starts in goal, posting a 0.692 save percentage. The fifth-year keeper recorded nine shutouts last season and a career-best 0.786 save percentage.
5 – HOW TO FOLLOW – Monday's match will be played at the Badgers' McClimon Soccer Complex, with admission free to all.
