Foster plates two to secure series win
MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team secured its second consecutive Big Ten series win, shutting down Maryland 3-0 at Goodman Diamond behind a steady pitching performance and a pair of RBIs from junior Makenzie Foster.Â
Freshman Berritt Herr, sophomore Jordan Felci and sophomore Kendra Lewis tossed the Badgers' (18-11, 4-4 B1G) sixth shutout of the year and the first in Big Ten play. Herr tallied her eighth win as well, a team-best.Â
The offense got the scoring started with the help of Foster, who put together a career day at the plate. In the first, the left-handed hitter slapped a single to the opposite field with the bases loaded to make it 1-0. UW has now scored in the first inning in 16 of their 29 games.Â
It was Foster once again in the third, as she pulled a base hit to right field to double the Badgers' advantage. The junior matched a career-best in RBI, tallying two for just the second time in her career.Â
After Felci escaped a jam in the top half of the sixth, sophomore Hannah Conger wrapped up the scoring in the Saturday matinee, forcing a throwing error after her leadoff double in the bottom half of the frame.Â
Lewis worked around some trouble in the final frame, as junior Alivia Bark fielded a ground ball at third and sealed the shutout win—terminating the Terrapins (13-19, 1-10 B1G) and earning a series victory for the first time at home this year.Â
