Five Things to Know: Badgers head west for Bryan Clay Invitational

Select distance runners to compete in California
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field team travels west to Azusa, California for the Bryan Clay Invitational on Wednesday, April 16 to Friday, April 18. Events begin at 7:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday, 8:20 p.m. on Thursday and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

1. SMASHING SUCCESS: Junior Jalen Williams broke the school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.49 seconds at last week's 44 Farms Team Invitational, surpassing LeRoy Dixson's 1983 mark of 45.63. The Washington, D.C. native finished third in the race and now holds the second-fastest time in the Big Ten Conference.
2. THRILLING THROWS: Senior Jason Swarens claimed first place in the shot put with a throw of 66 feet, 2½ inches (20.18 meters), setting a new meet record and posting the top mark in the nation this season. It was his first time competing in the event this year after finishing as the NCAA runner-up in the outdoor shot put last season. Meanwhile, Joseph White stood out with a discus throw of 192-9 (58.76m), placing third overall and moving up to second all-time in Wisconsin history. Jake Schafer also competed in the discus, finishing 25th with a throw of 46-3 (44.59 meters). In the javelin, Jacob Zednik delivered a standout performance with a throw of 227-2 (69.25m), earning sixth place and the third-best mark in school history.
3. SPECTACULAR SPENCER: At the 2025 Australian National Championships, Adam Spencer clocked a time of 3:34.57 to secure second place in the final. The 2024 Olympian's performance ranks as the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this season.
4. OUT WEST: Bryce Stachewicz and Pierce Seigne are set to compete in the 1500 meters, set to start Friday at 7:00 p.m. CT. Christian de Vaal will make his outdoor season debut in the 5000 meters. He currently ranks 10th all-time in the Wisconsin records in the indoor 5000 meters with a time of 13:41.17. The freshman will be joined by Archie Noakes and Rowen Ellenberg. The 5000 meters competition will begin Thursday at 8:20 p.m. CT.
5. UP NEXT: The Badgers split up for numerous meets next week, including the Penn Relays and the Drake Relays. Other athletes will head to the Texas Invite and Fighting Illini Twilight. These four meets will take place between Wednesday, Apr. 23 and Saturday, Apr. 26.
