Caufield nets team-leading 10th goal of the season
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men's hockey came out flying and dominated the first period, but it was No. 1 Minnesota that scored the period's only goal on the way to a 4-1 victory on Friday at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers (10-19-0, 3-16-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) limited the Gophers (21-7-1, 14-3-1 1-1-0 Big Ten) to just three shots and fired 21 of their own in the first period, but the Gophers took a 1-0 lead at 15:57 when Logan Cooley slipped the puck under the pad of Jared Moe on a set up from Jimmy Snuggerud and Matthew Knies.
The Gophers jumped to 2-0 at the start of the second period when Snuggerud fired off a wrist shot from the slot on a feed from Ryan Johnson.
Bryce Brodzinski added to the lead at 8:35 in the second period.
Kyle McClellan took over for Moe after Minnesota's third goal.
Wisconsin held their edge in shots 30-10 in the second period but it wasn't until the final frame that it got on the board.
Minnesota added to its tally just over a minute into the third period. Jackson LaCombe worked the puck around the Badgers' zone to Mike Koster on the point who laid a shot on net for a tap in goal by Brodzinski.
The Badgers got a jolt of momentum when graduate forward Brock Caufield one-timed a pass from Sam Stange past goaltender Justen Close for UW's first tally.Â
The Badgers' comeback effort fell short as they dropped the game to Minnesota, 4-1.
Both Minnesota and Wisconsin played a physical game throughout, including a highlight-reel worthy hit from Carson Bantle.
