Seven wrestlers competed at Iowa tournament
CORALVILLE, Iowa — Seven Wisconsin wrestlers traveled to Iowa for the Soldier Salute tournament held at XTream Arena in Coralville.
Hosted by Iowa, the event was dominated by 30 Hawkeyes in the individual and team standings (228 team points), but the Badgers small roster of younger wrestlers collected 39 team points with four UW student-athletes placing on the podium.
Freshman Gannon Rosenfeld led the team with a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds. Rosenfeld earned three victories on his run, collecting a 8-1 decision over Terren Swartz (Wyoming) and a sudden-victory 3-1 decision over Austin Kohlhofer (Army West Point). After entering the consolation bracket, Rosenfeld climbed back into the third-place match thanks to a victory over Bradley Hill (Iowa) with a 9-5 decision.
Sophomore teammate Brooks Empey also finished 12th overall in the heavyweight bracket. Empey opened the tournaments with back-to-back pins as he earned victories by fall against Josh Evans (VMI) in 3:18 and William Muckler (Bellarmine) in 5:59. Sophomore Jonah Schmidtke also competed in the 285-pound bracket.
Sophomore Graham Calhoun added another podium spot to his tournament performances this season as he finished in fifth place at 174 pounds. Calhoun finished 4-2 overall including a pin in 1:52 over Jackson Glasgow (unattached).
Freshman Dylan Coy placed seventh overall at 133 pounds. Coy collected two decisions including a 4-2 win against Northern Iowa's Garrett Funk in the placing match.
Freshman Cody Goebel and junior Aidan Medora also competed at 149 pounds. Medora earned a 3-2 decision over Iowa's Cade Siebrecht.
