Badgers sink Lakers in Holiday Face-Off semifinals

Badgers headed to Holiday Face-Off championship for second straight year
MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin men's hockey team took down Lake Superior State in the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off semifinals at Fiserv Forum.
After a slow start, the Badgers netted a pair of goals in the second and third periods to shutout the Lakers, 4-0.
The Badgers and Lakers battled through a scoreless first period where UW held the edge in shots 14-7.
Graduate forward Brock Caufield broke the stalemate to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead at 2:36 in the second period. Mike Vorlicky started the play deep in the Badgers zone with a breakout pass to Cruz Lucius on the Badger blue line. He set up De St. Phalle upon entry into the Lakers' zone where he set up Caufield for a wrist shot from the high slot.
Carson Bantle added to the tally at 7:02 with a power-play goal from the edge of the crease. Lucius got possession of the puck high in the zone and found De St. Phalle on the wing. De St. Phalle then found Bantle on the far side where he tapped the puck past LSSU goaltender Ethan Langenegger.
Sam Stange put the Badgers up 3-0 with 3:33 remaining in the third period. Zach Urdahl set up Ceulemans for a rush deep into the Lakers' zone. He passed to Stange in the slot where he picked the far corner with a backhand wrist shot.
LSSU pulled their goaltender with less than two minutes remaining. Liam Malmquist filled the empty net from the neutral zone, with help from Robby Newton's first career point.
The Badgers' 4-0 win over Lake Superior State punches their ticket to the tournament finale where they'll defend their title as Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off champions with a matchup against Clarkson. The Golden Knights overcame a 3-0 deficit to No. 15 Massachusetts for a 6-3 victory.
