Badgers claim WCHA Final Faceoff title

Wisconsin defeats Ohio State in overtime of the championship game

MINNEAPOLIS— The Wisconsin women's hockey team claimed its ninth WCHA tournament championship thanks to a 3-2 overtime win over Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Ridder Arena.

Lacey Eden scored the game-winning goal 42 seconds into the first overtime, giving the Badgers (14-3-1) their fifth WCHA tournament title in the last seven years.

Daryl Watts, the WCHA Player of the Year, scored twice in the second period while Kennedy Blair made 18 saves in net for UW.

The first period was quiet and both teams went into the second scoreless.

Watts was first on the board with a goal just minutes into the second period. OSU matched Wisconsin shortly after and the teams were tied at 1-1.

The Badgers were able to hold the Buckeyes off on a 4-on-3 penalty kill, then a 5-on-3 penalty kill and finally a 5-on-4 penalty kill to maintain control.

Watts scored her second goal in the middle frame to give UW a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Ohio State's Sophie Jaques scored halfway through the final frame to tie it up and eventually send the two teams into overtime.

Eden sealed the deal for the Badgers with her eighth goal of the season.

Wisconsin claimed both the WCHA regular-season title and the WCHA Final Faceoff title for the sixth time in school history.

Three Notes of the Game

  • This is Wisconsin's ninth WCHA Final Faceoff title. All nine come under the direction of head coach Mark Johnson, who was named the WCHA Coach of the Year last week.

  • Eden tallied a career-high three points in the title game on two assists and the overtime game-winning goal. She has 15 points in 12 games with the Badgers.

  • With her two goals, Daryl Watts moves into a three-way tie for 15th place for NCAA career points with 237 points.

Head coach Mark Johnson
On Lacey Eden:
"She's earned her time. She's played very well in the period of time that she's been with us. She's scored some big goals prior to tonight. You look at players and their willingness to earn more playing time and get put on a power play and maybe kill a penalty. It's just the process of us getting to know her and her getting to know us. I couldn't be happier for her."

On overtime play:
"Overtime is making sure you take care of the puck. It's like the second period so you have long line changes so you don't want to get caught out on an extended shift and make a poor line change to give the other team an opportunity. Then it's just about getting pucks to the net. Any shot in overtime is a good shot."

Freshman forward Lacey Eden
On joining Wisconsin:
"It's been an amazing experience so far and I'm so excited for the future. Everything about it has been surreal. Everyone accepted me onto the team right away and we've just gotten so close over the past couple of months. Every single day in practice everybody is giving 100 percent, everybody wants to be there, everybody is so focused on the goal and that's such a special environment to be in. There's nothing quite like it."

Senior forward Daryl Watts
On post-season chances:
"I think this team, we're so deep. We've got so many skilled players. Even more than that, we get along so well off the ice. I couldn't be happier to be part of this team. I really like our chances."
