Wisconsin climbs within two points of Big Ten lead
MINNEAPOLIS — The No. 11 Wisconsin men's hockey team (12-7-0, 10-5-0 0-1-0 Big Ten) took down the Big Ten's top team tonight, defeating second-ranked Minnesota (15-4-0, 11-4-0-0-0-0 Big Ten) in a 4-1 contest in 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Cole Caufield opened up the scoring just a minute into the first period. Ty Pelton-Byce passed the puck up through the neutral zone to send Caufield on a breakaway, giving the Badgers an early 1-0 lead.
The Gophers tied the game up at 8:01 in the second period after working the puck around the Badger's zone. Sammy Walker slipped the puck past UW goaltender Robbie Beydoun, with help from Scott Reedy and Blake McLaughlin.
Both teams held on through the remainder of the second period, but Cole Caufield rebroke the ice at 13:00 in the third period. Peloton-Byce fed the puck to Linus Weissbach, who served the puck on a silver platter for Caufield to hammer into the net.
Just 42 seconds later, Dylan Holloway scored a highlight-reel worthy goal. Brock Caufield found Holloway blazing through the neutral zone and fed him the puck. Holloway split the Gophers' defensmen and drove hard to the net, slipping the puck past the goaltender Jack LaFontaine. Josh Ess also picked up a point on the play.
Roman Ahcan got on the board at 15:18 in the third period, scoring the Badger's final goal in their 4-1 win. A shot from Holloway banked off Ahcan's head in front of the net on the power play.
The Badgers handed Minnesota their fourth loss of the season and are one of two teams (Notre Dame) to have taken down the Big Ten's top team.
