
Baker named candidate for Senior CLASS Award

Badgers captain recognized for academics, athletics and community service
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men's hockey captain Tarek Baker was selected as a candidate for the 2021-22 Senior CLASS Award in recognition of his achievements both on and off the ice.Â
Baker is part of 20 student-athletes from across the country named for their notable achievements in four areas of expertise: community, classroom, character and competition.Â
After earning his undergraduate degree in life sciences communication from UW, Baker returned for a fifth season with the Badgers and is now studying education leadership and policy analysis as a graduate student. He is a three-time member of the Academic All-Big Ten team.
Baker is also active in the Madison area community. He has volunteered at the UW Children's Hospital for Caleb's Pitch, a project where he made syringe art with patients, and participated with The Special Olympics' and 'The Ride,' which raises funds for the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
In addition, Baker has worked with the UW Shoe Project, where he provided shoes to a needy family and spent time participating in school visits the summer before his freshman season.
The Verona, Wisconsin, native currently wears the "C" for the Badgers and served as an alternate captain his junior and senior seasons. He tallied 29 goals and 44 assists for 73 points in 154 games played as a Badger, including 20-point seasons his freshman and sophomore years. Earlier this season, he scored a short-handed game-winning goal to lift Wisconsin over Army in the final minutes of the third period. He currently leads the Badgers with five goals and ranks second with 10 points for hte 2021-22 campaign.
Baker continues to embody what it means to be a student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin and give back to your community in his fifth season donning the cardinal and white.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
The 20 candidates will be narrowed to ten finalists later in the season. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character, and competition.Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2022 NCAA Men's Frozen Four® in April.
