Carson Bantle nets two goals in 5-4 OT loss
MADISON, Wis. — Despite a three-goal comeback effort, the Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team (5-12-1, 3-7-0 1-1-0) dropped the series finale 5-4 in overtime to Penn State.
After a 4-1 defeat the previous night, Penn State (11-8-0, 3-7-0 1-0-0 Big Ten) came out of the gate ready to battle.
Penn State scored early on in the contest to take their first lead of the series 1-0. Connor MacEachern scored off a rebound in front of the crease, assisted by Danny Dzhaniyev at 1:29 in the first period.Â
Right off the following faceoff, Mathieu De St. Phalle netted what would have been his third goal of the season, but the play was deemed offside upon review.Â
Kevin Wall gave the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead at 7:59 in the first period on a play from Ben Schoen and Tyler Gratton.Â
The Badgers went on the man advantage after Penn State received a five-minute misconduct for head contact. Carson Bantle notched his second goal of the season with a tap in right on the doorstep. De St. Phalle made a pass across the zone to Jack Gorniak who fired a shot on net where Bantle was in position to tap in the rebound.Â
Schoen added one more to Penn State's tally before the period was over with 52 seconds on the clock, assisted by Ryan Kirwan to leave the Badgers with a 3-1 deficit heading into the second period.
Penn State's Dzhaniyev made it 4-1 at 1:44 in the second period on a two-on-one rush with Connor McMenamin, who set him up for a one-timer.Â
Wisconsin refused to quit.Â
Bantle scored his second goal of the game at 3:26 of the third period. Freshman defenseman Corson Ceulemans maneuvered through two blue jerseys and put the puck on net where Bantle jabbed in the rebound. De St. Phalle recorded the secondary assist on the play.Â
Ceulemans put the Badgers within one when fired a rocket past Penn State's Oskar Autio on a feed from Brock Caufield and Tarek Baker. With under four minutes to go, the Badgers trailed 4-3.
Wisconsin pulled goaltender Jared Moe in favor of the extra skater with 1:30 on the clock. Jack Gorniak forced the game into overtime when he walked in Penn State's zone and fired the puck into the back of the net off a cross from Ceulemans. Just like that, the Badgers headed into three-on-three overtime knotted up at 4-4.
Penn State claimed the game 5-4 at 1:41 in the overtime period with a goal from Paul DeNaples, assisted by Kirwan and Dzhaniyev.
Despite the loss, the Badgers displayed their ability to battle back from a multi-goal deficit. Goaltender Jared Moe made a career high 47 saves on the night and kept UW in the game until the very end.
