MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin women's basketball coach Jonathan Tsipis announced Monday that he promoted Craig Carter and Kayla Karius as the Badgers' new associate head coaches.
Carter, starting his fifth season with the Badgers, works primarily with UW's perimeter players. Most recently, he worked with Wisconsin record holder Kendra Van Leeuwen, as well as freshman standout, Sydney Hilliard.
In total, he has over 15 seasons of Division I experience as an assistant coach and has served as the lead scout for the Badger program over the past four seasons. Coach Carter was a four-year letter-winner for Rutgers from 1987-91, serving as a two-time team captain. Rutgers participated in three postseason tournaments, including the NCAA tournament in 1989 and 1991. He has been selected twice for the prestigious NCAA Achieving Coaching Excellence program and is a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as well as the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
"Craig has been invaluable as an in-game resource for our program as well as an outstanding mentor to our student-athletes," Tsipis said.
"His ability to help our student-athletes reach their potential on-and-off court is outstanding. He works tirelessly to improve our program in all areas. I am grateful for his loyalty and excited to promote him to Associate Head Coach."
A native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Kayla Karius enters her third year with the Badgers, working as the team's recruiting coordinator. Starting with the 2019 recruiting class that included four players in the nation's top 150 prospects, including in-state Badgers Sydney Hilliard and Tara Stauffacher, Karius' efforts continued with the 2020 class, which included two top 100 prospects, Halle Douglass and Brooke Schramek.
In total, Karius has spearheaded recruiting efforts that added 11 new faces to the Badgers' roster over the past two seasons. Joining them are two transfers, former Wisconsin Miss Basketball 2017, Estella Moschkau (Stanford), and nationally-ranked shooting guard, Lexi Duckett (North Carolina).
A collegiate standout at UW-Green Bay, Karius led the Phoenix to four Horizon League titles, three NCAA Tournaments, including the Sweet 16 in 2011. She was twice named first-team all-league, made the all-defensive team, and was named the 2011 Horizon League Co-Player of the Year as a senior.
"Kayla's enthusiasm and dedication to our program have bolstered our recruiting efforts since her arrival," Tsipis said.
"As a former in-state standout, Kayla brings that same energy to our program on the court and transfers it over to both the team and staff. She has developed great relationships with our student-athletes and serves as a great role model as a former player, sharing her experiences with them. I am ecstatic to promote her to Associate Head Coach."
