MADISON, Wis. — The No. 11 Wisconsin women's rowing team hopes to make a statement at the 2019 Big Ten Championships, which this year is set at the largest, most visited and third oldest state park in Wisconsin -- Devil's Lake in Baraboo. This elite event will play host to eight top-ranked Big Ten teams that will compete across an eight lane course with one race per boat. The first race will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers last raced two weekends ago in Princeton, N.J. All three Wisconsin crews finished in second place. The varsity eight and second varsity eight both crossed the line behind No. 7 Princeton and ahead of No. 16 Rutgers and Columbia. The varsity four finished behind the Scarlet Knights and before the Tigers and Lions.
BIG TEN HISTORY: Wisconsin has placed in the top three overall as a team the past eight years, including its lone Big Ten team title in 2010 and a second place team finish in 2016. Wisconsin hosts the Big Ten championships for the third time in history, but for the first time at Devil's Lake. The inaugural championships in 2000 and the 2007 Big Ten Championships were held on Lake Wingra in Madison. The Lake Wingra course was 1,850 meters, shy of the official NCAA race distance of 2,000 meters that this year's event will cover.
ELITE EIGHT: The Big Ten championships plays host to six ranked teams and two more just outside the top 20, including No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 12 Iowa, No. 14 Rutgers, No 15 Indiana. Minnesota (21) and Michigan State (23) also received other votes. All eight teams will line up next to each other for one race per boat. Wisconsin has yet to see the Wolverines, Buckeyes, Gophers and Spartans this season, but has seen action against the Hawkeyes and Hoosiers at the Big Ten Double Dual and the Scarlet Knights in Princeton earlier this season. The winner of the 2019 Big Ten Championship will receive an automatic bid into the 22-team NCAA championships that take place May 31-June 2 in Indianapolis. Additional Big Ten Squads can earn NCAA bids as an at-large team, which will be announced on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT.
