Campbell earns NCAA-leading seventh shutout in 3-0 victory

DULUTH, Minn. – Wisconsin women's hockey netminder Kristen Campbell made 24 saves to earn her seventh shutout of the year as the No. 2 Badgers blanked Minnesota Duluth, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena.

After a scoreless first period for Wisconsin, Alexis Mauermann beat Bulldogs goaltender Maddie Rooney in the second. Mauermann sliced in a chaotic rebound at the front of the net to put the Badgers ahead early in the second frame.

With 5:13 remaining in the second, Emily Clark scored her third of the weekend, rocketing in a shot past Rooney to give UW a 2-0 lead.

Sam Cogan put the exclamation point on the game with her fourth goal in five games, scoring 22 seconds in to the third period. The Ottawa, Ontario, native buried Wisconsin's third of the day off a fantastic assist from senior Mikaela Gardner.

Three Notes of the Game

UW extended its unbeaten streak against UMD to 12 games with an 11-0-1 record against the Bulldogs
Wisconsin outshot Minnesota Duluth 52-24, including a 20-5 margin in the final 20 minutes.
Following the sweep, the Badgers are in first place in the WCHA standings with 54 points and are two points ahead of Minnesota heading into the final weekend of the year.

Play of the Game
Campbell made several big stops against the Bulldogs, but her biggest came towards the end of the second period. The Brandon, Manitoba, native helped stop a 4-1 rush by UMD to help UW maintain a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of action.

UW Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the overall game:
"I thought it was a good game. I talked about how they were going to push us the first seven or eight minutes and that's what they did. Kristen was really good during that stretch and gave us a chance to get organized. After that we were pretty good."

On Emily Clark:
"It's nice to get your senior leadership on the scoresheet. Last night, (Annie) Pankowski and Clark were on it. Clark missed a good chunk of the season due to injury but came up big this weekend. She had a couple of goals last night, a big goal again for us today. It's nice to see her rewarded as she's a good player that's done a lot for us. Looking forward to see what she has left in the tank."

On next weekend:
"We're going to enjoy the bus ride home and get organized. It's going to be an emotional weekend for our seniors. It's going to be a fun series, you work hard and long and you get to the last weekend and have a chance to do something and we're looking forward to it."

Junior goaltender Kristen Campbell
On her 24-save performance:
"We knew that Minnesota Duluth was going to come back today and push, they're a great program and had a really strong year this year. Just sticking to the simple keys that we need to execute really helped us all out today and everyone played great out in front of me."

On gaining confidence off of good saves heading into the third:
"Duluth really pressured us at points in the first and second period and it helps to jump out to that two goal lead. Just trying to do whatever it takes to keep that lead for our team, it really felt like we had momentum going into the third. We were really excited to be able to go finish it off."

Up Next:
The Badgers return home to take on No. 10 Ohio State in the final series of the regular season. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest, which will serve as Senior Day, begins at 3 p.m. Both games are sold out.
