Wisconsin women head to Columbus in final tune-up for Big Ten championships
MADISON, Wis.– Members of the Wisconsin women's swimming team are set to compete at the Ohio State Winter Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. Before the Badgers hit the blocks, here are five things to know.Â
1.Bounce Back:Â In its last outing, Wisconsin's Red Team bested the White team, 146-82, in an intrasquad meet at the UW Natatorium.Â
Â
The friendly meeting turned record-breaking, as two UW pool records were rewritten.Â
Â
MJ Mao, Matthew Novinski, Erik Gessner and Griffin Back plunged the men's 200 medley relay record to 1:27.08.Â
Â
Beata Nelson, Jess Unicomb, Kelsi Artim and Emmy Sehmann followed suit, setting the women's 200 medley relay standard at 1:38.04.Â

2. Fantastic Five: Wisconsin will send five competitors to the Ohio State Winter Invitational.Â
The cohort is made up of freshmen Claire Birchenough and Holly Stoll, sophomore Gabby Higgins, junior Kendall Smith and senior Molly Manchon.Â

3. Meet Minutiae: The 12-event meet, which features invitational-style preliminary and final rounds, begins Saturday at 10 a.m. CT. Â
Saturday's events are, in order, the 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 400 individual medley relay and 100 freestyle.Â

Sunday's events consist of the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley.Â

Junior Beata Nelson, the reigning Big Ten champion in the 100 back and 200 back, will look to reclaim her hardware in a crowded field of competitors.Â
The 2019 Big Ten Men's Championships will commence one week thereafter, running Feb. 27 to March 2 in Iowa City.Â
