Wisconsin's late rally falls short to BYU, 24-21

Deal scores two TDs in home loss

MADISON, Wis. — No. 6 Wisconsin suffered its first loss of the season — and first nonconference home loss since 2003 — as the Badgers fell 24-21 to BYU on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.

Tied up 14-14 at halftime and 21-21 at the start of the final quarter, a BYU field goal saw the Cougars take a 24-21 lead with 9:58 left in the game and Wisconsin never got back on the board. With 36 seconds left, UW's Rafael Gaglianone's 42-yard field goal attempt missed wide left to end the Badgers' rally hopes.

Wisconsin's Taiwan Deal proved effective in the short run, scoring two touchdowns for the Badgers on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and 5-yard run in the fourth quarter. Teammate Alec Ingold added a third on his own 2-yard run.

The Cougars' Squally Canada ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while the visiting team also tossed in a trick play when receiver Aleva Hifo found open tight end Moroni Laulu-Pututau for a 31-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

UW quarterback Alex Hornibrook threw for 190 yards, giving him 4,501 career passing yards to rank eighth all-time at UW. Jonathan Taylor finished with 117 yards rushing, topping the 100-yard mark for the 13th time in 17 career games. Wisconsin's defense saw nose tackle Olive Sagapolu recorded his first sack of the season in the first quarter, the fifth of his career. Inside linebacker Ryan Connelly led UW with 8 tackles, including one tackle for loss.

Wisconsin lost for the first time in the last 42 non-conference games at home, snapping the fifth-longest streak by an FBS team in the modern era (since 1946). UW's last non-conference loss at Camp Randall came in a 23-5 setback to UNLV on Sept. 13, 2003.

Looking ahead, Wisconsin opens the Big Ten season on the road next Saturday at Iowa. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m (CT) on FOX.
