Badgers searching for ninth-straight top-three finish
MADISON, Wis. – With just four weekends of competition under its belt this season, the No. 13 Wisconsin women's rowing team travels to Indianapolis for the 2018 Big Ten Championships.
The Badgers took advantage of the racing they have done this year, and even got creative with a trip to Seattle to get in some extra water time this spring.
"It's always a challenge to figure out ways to get more rowing in and more racing in and not have it bite us in the butt at the end of the season," head coach Bebe Bryans said.
"Our team is doing really well right now. They're getting excited, they're getting faster every time they get out on the water so I think it's a good time for us to be heading into the championships. We had a good performance at Clemson, and we had a better performance at Princeton. Those two back-to-back pretty strong regattas for us led into a couple strong weeks of training."
Seeded fourth heading into the championships, the Badgers are looking to upset the rankings and podium for the ninth-straight year, improving their chances at the program's 13th NCAA championship bid under Bryans' tenure. But to do it, the Badgers have to go through the deepest conference in the country. Seven of the eight programs are either ranked or receiving votes in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches poll and last year's NCAA field featured five Big Ten teams.
"We're not the fastest conference right now, but we're definitely the deepest," Bryans said. "We are the youngest of the big conferences. We had to scratch and claw just to have people see that we are legitimate, and now there's no doubt. We will see at least two if not three of the best of the top-10 in the country this weekend. Hopefully we're one of them."
Selections for the 22-team NCAA championships, which runs May 25-27 in Sarasota, Florida, will be announced on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at NCAA.com. UW looks for its 11th consecutive invitation to the championships.
The 2018 Big Ten Rowing Championships will air tape-delayed on Sunday, May 20 at 10 a.m. CT on BTN.
