UW sees its season draw to a close with a 4-3 setback on Friday

MINNEAPOLIS — Despite dominating possession and outshooting the Raiders 48-24, the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team fell, 4-3, in double-overtime to No. 3 Colgate in an NCAA semifinal game Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Colgate senior Breanne Wilson-Bennett put the Raiders on the board late in the first period after her shot rerouted past sophomore goaltender Kristen Campbell.

Senior forward Baylee Wellhausen evened the game at one nearly six and a half minutes into the second frame, but Colgate's Wilson-Bennett responded with her second goal of the night in the final 30 seconds to once again give the Raiders the lead.

Senior forward Claudia Kepler scored her eighth power-play goal of the season at the 6:37 mark of the third period to knot the game up at two, but Colgate answered once more with a power-play goal of their own to take the lead for the third time.

Sophomore defenseman Mekenzie Steffen kept Wisconsin in the game after scoring with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Despite outshooting Colgate 15-7 in the two overtime periods, Wilson-Bennett notched her third of the night and the game-winner to lift the Raiders in the waning minutes of the second overtime.

Three Notes of the Game:
• Senior captain Baylee Wellhausen scored her 11th goal of the season in tonight's loss. More than half of the forward's goals this season have come at Ridder Arena.
• Sophomore goaltender Kristen Campbell stopped 20 shots in the loss and ends her first season with the Badgers with a .939 save percentage and a 1.19 goals against average.
• UW outshot Colgate in every period of the game, including 11-5 in the first period.

On the setback:
"We just came up a little short. It wasn't a lack of effort. I thought for the most part created some opportunities, had opportunities, and for whatever reason it just didn't work out. It's always a tough pill to swallow when it ends your season. For Baylee (Wellhausen), Lauren (Williams) and Claudia (Kepler), our three seniors, it's tough. I told them that they should walk out of here with their heads up because they have a lot to be proud of. They had a great season and they played well tonight. We just came up a little bit short."
