Badgers drop pair of games in Texas

Wisconsin falls to Colorado State and Texas on day one of Texas Classic
AUSTIN, Texas – The Wisconsin softball team fell short on the first day of the Texas Classic, dropping a close 3-2 contest with Colorado State before Texas claimed a 5-1 victory Friday at McCombs Field.
Colorado State (1-0) countered in the top of the second with a run of its own to cut Wisconsin's lead to 2-1. Another CSU run in the fourth tied things up at two apiece.
UW regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Brianna Flugaur scored off a Scherle single. The Badgers were in prime position to strike again with Brooke Wyderski on second and Scherle on third with one out, but a CSU double play ended the inning before they could tack on another run, taking a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning.
Once again Colorado State was quick to respond, sneaking two more runs in to lead, 4-3. The Badgers were unable to overcome the one-point deficit in the final two innings, dropping their first game of the year.
Texas (2-0) tied things up in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead with another run in the fourth. Hathaway hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to seal a 5-1 win.
-Senior Kelsey Jenkins, junior Melanie Cross and freshman Taylor Johnson led the team with two hits on the day.
Wisconsin vs. Colorado
The Badgers (0-2) started their season with a great first inning. A Kelsey Jenkins double proved lethal when Gabby Scherle laid down a beautiful bunt forcing a CSU defensive error allowing Jenkins to score. Scherle tacked on another run later in the inning thanks to a Stephanie Lombardo sac fly.Colorado State (1-0) countered in the top of the second with a run of its own to cut Wisconsin's lead to 2-1. Another CSU run in the fourth tied things up at two apiece.

Freshman Taylor Johnson earned her first-career RBI when she singled to left field allowing Jenkins to put the Badgers on the board.Texas (2-0) tied things up in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead with another run in the fourth. Hathaway hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to seal a 5-1 win.
