Notes from the Badgers 59-10 win

POSTGAME NOTES
Wisconsin 59, Utah State 10
Sept. 1, 2017

TEAM NOTES
  • Tonight's captains: senior TE Troy Fumagalli, senior S Natrell Jamerson, senior DE Alec James and senior WR Jazz Peavy.
  • Tonight's attendance at Camp Randall Stadium: 75,324.
  • Wisconsin won its home opener for the 22nd-consecutive year, dating back to 1996. That extends the second-longest active streak in the nation (Florida, 27 straight).
  • UW has outscored opponents 253-23 in its last 5 home openers, an average of 46.0 per game.
  • The Badgers won their 38th-consecutive non-conference home game, dating back to 2003, extending the sixth-longest streak by any FBS team in the modern era (since 1946).
  • Friday's win marked the 350th all-time for the Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium, which is celebrating its centennial in 2017. UW is now 350-194-23 (.638) at Camp Randall.
  • UW has won 8 of its last 9 night games at Camp Randall Stadium, dating back to 2009.
  • Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst won his 100th game as a member of UW's coaching staff, a career that includes stints as tight ends coach (2002), offensive coordinator (2005-11) and head coach (2015-present).
  • Overall, Wisconsin has won 19 of its last 23 games (.826), dating back to the 2015 season.
  • Wisconsin's 59 points are the most scored during Chryst's head coaching tenure, surpassing the previous high in a 58-0 win over Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 12, 2015.
  • After falling behind 10-0, Wisconsin scored 59 unanswered points, including 24 over a span of 4 minutes, 52 seconds to take a 24-10 lead.
    • With 1:12 left in the second quarter, UW capped a 15-play, 79-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run from Bradrick Shaw.
    • After a T.J. Edwards interception set UW up with a short field, Rafael Gaglianone converted a 29-yard field goal as time expired on the first half.
    • The Badgers' first drive of the second half covered 72 yards in 4 plays and ended with a 23-yard TD pass from Alex Hornibrook to Troy Fumagalli, just 2:00 into the third quarter.
    • A D'Cota Dixon interception on Utah State's ensuing possession set up another UW score, with Hornibrook finding Zander Neuville on a 28-yard TD pass to cap a 3-play, 53-yard drive with 11:20 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Badgers scored on 5 consecutive possessions across the second and third quarters — including 4 scoring drives of 5 plays or fewer — to take a 31-10 lead. The turnaround followed a start that saw UW run just 18 plays and gain only 40 yards over its first 4 drives of the game.
  • The Badgers managed just 27 yards on 13 plays (2.1 yards per play) during the first quarter. Wisconsin would tally 451 yards on 55 plays (8.2 yards per play).
  • Wisconsin recorded four takeaways, tallying three interceptions and one fumble recovery. UW converted those four turnovers into 24 points. The Badgers led all power five programs with 22 INTs last season.
  • UW's defense limited Utah State to 85 rushing yards. The Badgers held eight teams under 100 yards rushing last season.
