Badgers honored for grade-point average of 3.7 or better
MADISON, Wis. — Fifty-six student-athletes from the University of Wisconsin have been named 2016-17 Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholars. Distinguished Scholar awards are presented to student-athletes who have recorded a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or better for the academic year.
The 2016-17 class includes eight student-athletes who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the year. This group includes Taylor Kuhn, women's basketball; Tyson Miehe and Malachy Schrobilgen, men's cross country and track and field; Kelsey Jenkins, softball; Audrey Dalgarno, women's lightweight rowing, Thomas Walker, men's rowing and Hazel Hertting and Abby Jagdfeld, women's swimming and diving.
Â
Several Badgers on the list also earned national honors including men's cross country All-American Schrobilgen, men's cross country All-American and Academic All-American Morgan McDonald; women's hockey All-American Annie Pankowski; softball All-American Jenkins; women's swimming and diving All-Americans Marissa Berg, Dana Grindall and Ashley Peterson; women's lightweight rower Brianna Wynne and wrestling All-American Connor Medbery.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
