MADISON, Wis. – The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team opens its WCHA slate with a road series at Minnesota State this weekend. The Badgers and Mavericks meet on Friday in a 7 p.m. CT contest at the Verizon Wireless Center before concluding the series on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tilt.
Fans can follow the game on Twitter (@BadgerWHockey) and check UWBadgers.com following each game for a recap.
1. AGAINST THE MAVS: The Badgers-Mavericks all-time series is one of the longest in either team's history. Wisconsin boasts an impressive all-time series record against Minnesota State, winning 78 of 83 contests and outscoring the Mavericks 395 goals to 73. The last time Wisconsin and Minnesota State met, the Badgers ousted the Mavericks 6-0 in the first round of the 2017 WCHA playoffs. The Badgers will look to stretch the all-time series lead to 80-2-3 this weekend against MSU.
2. LOOKING FOR THE THREE-PEAT: A quest for a third-straight WCHA regular season title begins this weekend for the Cardinal and White after the Badgers were crowned league champions in 2016 and 2017. Surprisingly, UW has never won three-straight conference regular season titles and only Minnesota has accomplished the feat once.
3. ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER AWARD: Badgers goaltender Kristen Campbell earned her first league honor of the season as the sophomore was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Campbell received the award after recording 36 saves and a shutout for a 1.00 goals against average and a .947 save percentage in Wisconsin's series sweep of Syracuse last weekend. Campbell currently leads the NCAA in shutouts, recording clean sheets in three contests for the Badgers so far this season.
4. ROQUE AND ROLL: Sophomore forward Abby Roque has notched eight assists so far this season, enough to lead the NCAA. The sophomore has contributed assists in four of Wisconsin's six contests, and dished out a career-high three assists on two separate occasions to lead the Badgers to series sweeps of both Mercyhurst and Syracuse. Roque also leads the NCAA in overall point scoring with 10 points from two goals and eight assists.
5. OLYMPIC CONNECTION: Both the Badgers and the Mavericks feature head coaches from the storybook 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that captured gold in Lake Placid, N.Y. UW head coach Mark Johnson and MSU head coach John Harrington were forwards for the Americans and both recorded points in the team's legendary semi-final against the Soviets.
