
Badgers open outdoor campaign with Aztec Invitational

Wisconsin wraps up spring break in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Wisconsin men's and women's track and field teams wrap up their spring break with their first meet of the outdoor season, the Aztec Invitational, this Thursday through Saturday at San Diego State University.
Multi-event athlete Casie Pawlik is the lone Badger competing on Thursday, the sophomore will compete in the heptathlon on Thursday and Friday. The heptathlon 100 hurdles start Thursday at 2 p.m. CT, while the heptathlon restarts Friday at 11 a.m. with the long jump.
The rest of the Badgers open their season on Friday, as the open section of the men's hammer throw is the first field event of the competition at 10 a.m. The first event on the track on Friday is the women's 4x100 meter relay that starts at 10:30 a.m.
On Saturday, the invitational section of the women's 4x100 relay is the first track event at 11:50 a.m., while the invitational section of the women's discus kick starts collegiate field events at noon.

A total of 50 student-athletes made the trip to San Diego on Monday after the Badgers spent the early part of the week training in preparation for the outdoor season. In addition to training on the track, UW had the chance to explore Coronado Island, spend time at the beach and enjoy San Diego.
After competing in the pentathlon at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships up the coast in Portland, Oregon, Georgia Ellenwood will have a light load this weekend in San Diego, as the Langley, British Columbia, native will throw the javelin.
Two weeks after winning the heptathlon title at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships, fifth-year senior Zach Ziemek will run the 400 meters and throw both the discus and javelin in San Diego in preparation for the decathlon.
Fellow fifth-year senior Kelsey Card, the Big Ten record-holder in the outdoor shot put and discus, is slated to compete in both events in addition to the hammer throw this weekend. Card earned first-team All-America honors in the shot put at the NCAA indoor championships after winning both the shot put and weight throw at the 2016 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Joining Card in the discus and hammer throw is freshman Haley Showalter, who is set to make her UW debut this weekend. Showalter won the hammer throw at the 2015 Junior Pan-American Games last summer and had prep personal-best of 194 feet, 1 inch, which ranks No. 7 on the U.S. all-time list.
Junior transfer Lorenzo Larry will make his outdoor debut for UW after running the school's second-best time in the 200 meters and UW's third-fastest time in the 60 meters during the 2016 indoor season.
Fifth-year senior Austin Mudd is slated to race in the invitational section of the men's 3000 meters, the two-time All-American is coming off of a fifth-place showing in the mile at the Big Ten indoor meet.
