Three Badgers advanced to quarterfinals
Midlands Bracket
EVANSTON, Ill. – It was a successful and surprising first day for the Wisconsin wrestling team after the Badgers advanced three into the quarterfinals on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior Connor Medbery proved once again why he is one of the best in his weight class, plowing through his bracket and moving onto Friday's semifinal match.
The heavyweight ended his fruitful first day of Midlands competition with a dominant pin in the quarterfinals over the No. 9 seed, Michael Boyd of North Carolina State. He will face No. 13-seed Jordan Wood of Lehigh (unattached) in the semifinals on Friday morning.
The Loveland, Colorado native was the dominant force for the Badgers in both sessions, accumulating a team-high 13.50 points. After receiving a bye in the first round, Medbery started his day with a 2-1 decision over Oregon State's David Henry. He took that momentum and exploded, picking up bonus wins in his next two matches.
Forty seconds into his match against Harvard's Nickolas Gajdzik, Medbery tallied a takedown and then less than 20 seconds later added four nearfall. Within another 30 seconds he had four more nearfall points to jump out to a 10-0 lead. Medbery was just under the one-minute mark when he tacked on two more nearfall points. With 16 seconds left in the bout, he finished off the 16-0 tech fall with a final two nearfall points. Medbery finished the day by pinning NC State's Michael Boykin in 3:36 in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Mason Reinhardt shocked many with an upset in his opening match and continued to impress throughout the day. He started the tournament with an 18-7 major decision upset over Oklahoma's eighth-seeded Brad Johnson. Trailing 2-0 headed into the second period, the flood gates opened for Reinhardt as he collected 16 points, all nearfall points in just that period alone.
He faces teammate Ricky Robertson, who collected three decisions on the day, in the consolation round on Friday.
In his first tournament of the season, senior TJ Ruschell had a strong showing, making it to the quarterfinals at 157 pounds. A 12-6 decision over the 11th-seeded Caden McWhirter of Northern Illinois led Ruschell to a matchup with No. 8-seed Dawaylon Barnes of Oklahoma.
The two foes went scoreless through the first two periods but Barnes shot up to a 3-0 lead behind an escape and takedown early in the third period. But Ruschell wasn't giving in, he escaped at the 51-second mark in the third and then mustered up a thrilling takedown with just five seconds left in regulation. In the end it was Ruschell who came out on top with a takedown in sudden victory clinching 5-3 victory and a spot in the quarterfinals.
Ruschell fell to 2015 Midlands Champion Jason Tsirtsis in the quarterfinals, 5-2, and will face teammate Evan Wick (unattached) in the consolation bracket on Friday.
Freshman Eli Stickley fought his way back through the consolation rounds, gathering the sixth-most falls/technical falls in the least amount of time of any wrestler in the tournament with two falls and one tech fall in 11:07.
Stickley was pinned in his opening match and came back with a vengeance recording back-to-back pins before registering a decision and a tech fall.
Similarly to Stickley, Andrew Crone bounced back in competition after dropping a 4-1 decision in the second round. He rebounded with a major decision and a fall before clinching two more decisions.
Evan Wick made a tear through the 157-pound bracket and has the fifth-most total match points (60) in the tournament. He lost his opening match but then won three of his next four by bonus-point wins.
Wisconsin is tied for first with the highest amount of pins (7) in 34:28. UW is second with the most amount of falls/tech falls in the least amount of time (52:52). The Cardinal and White is fifth for the highest amount of match points (330) behind Iowa (409), NC State (388), Nebraska (353) and Rutgers (346).
Jared Scharenbrock and Andrew Crone amassed the most matches of all the Midlands competitors with six matches apiece.
Wisconsin sits in eighth place with 49.5 points. Iowa (85.5), Nebraska (78.5) and Rutgers (64.5) round out the top three after the first day of competition.
???????Medbery is the Badgers' only semifinalist but Johnny Jimenez (125-unattached), Stickley (133), Crone (149), Ruschell (157),
Wick (157-unattached), Ryan Christensen (174), Mason Reinhardt (197) and Ricky Robertson (197) are all still alive in the consolation brackets.
