COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A one minute, 24 second stretch of the second period provided all the offense the Badgers needed on Friday as Wisconsin (7-4-0) skated to a 2-1 victory at Colorado College (3-8-0) inside Broadmoor World Arena.
"That was a solid road game, from start to finish," head coach
Tony Granato said.
Despite outshooting the home team, 14-3 in the first period, the Badgers went to the locker room down 1-0 after CC's Mason Bergh capitalized on a breakaway at 10:31 of the opening frame.
The small setback was a blip for the Badgers as the onslaught on the CC goal continued into the second period, with UW holding a 9-5 advantage in shots.
It finally cracked CC goaltender Alex Leclerc after the Badgers' fourth line of
Aidan Cavallini,
Jarod Zirbel and
Matthew Freytag drew a penalty 13:13 into the second period.
Will Johnson took a feed to the right of the CC goal from
Max Zimmer, skated a stride towards the net, and fired five hole past Leclerc for his third marker of the season.
Jason Ford collected the second assist on the goal at 14:59.
Just 1:24 later, Malone raced down the right boards for a loose puck and chopped at it. The puck flew in the air towards goal, where a streaking
Grant Besse got the tip of his stick on it to redirect it into the net for the eventual game-winner.
Jake Linhart got the second assist.
"We battled for every inch of ice," Granato stated. "You compete like that, you are going to have success no matter who you play. We emptied the tank."
The rest of the game continued in similar fashion, with UW outshooting CC 10-4 in the third period and freshman goaltender
Jack Berry standing tall when called upon.
Berry finished with 11 stops on just 12 shots faced. The 12 shots against were just three off the Wisconsin record for fewest shots against in a game.
"They didn't have much," Granato said. "And when they did, we were willing shot blockers and we kept them to the outside. Defensively, we played a real solid game."
UW scored once on three power-play chances, and killed off both penalties called against it.
Now 3-0-0 on the road this season, the Badgers head north on I-25 and go for a perfect road weekend with a contest at No. 2 Denver. The Saturday contest between the Badgers and Pioneers begins at 8 p.m. CT and can be seen on Altitude 2 or on NCHC.tv. The game also airs on the Badger Radio Network, including the BIG 1070 in Madison.
"Now we get a good meal, get some rest and play the same way tomorrow," Granato concluded.
