'Double Z' leads Badgers sweep at Jack Jennett Invitational
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Following Georgia Ellenwood's pentathlon win at the Jack Jennett Invitational on Friday, Wisconsin men's track and field redshirt senior Zach Ziemek completed the UW multi-event sweep, capturing the heptathlon crown on Saturday at the UNI Dome.
In his first heptathlon in almost two years, Ziemek won the seven-discipline event with a score of 5,801 points, which ranks second in the Big Ten Conference and seventh nationally.
Junior Brandon Mortensen took second with 5,413 points, missing the UW top-10 list by one point. Redshirt freshman Trent Nytes, in his heptathlon debut, was third with 5,357 points, while redshirt senior Charlie Foss was fourth with 5,220 points.
Foss won the 60-meter hurdles in 8:37 with Trent Nytes nipping at his heels, finishing in second with a time of 8.39. Placing third and fourth were Brandon Mortenson and Zach Ziemek with times of 8.44 and 8.48, respectively. Sophomore Sawyer Smith finished in 9.08 in the event before dropping out of the heptathlon.
Ziemek added another impressive mark in the pole vault to his resume this season, clearing 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches to win the sixth event. Mortenson placed fourth with a mark of 15-1, a personal-best. Foss wasn't far off that mark and ended with a fifth-place finish and a clearance of 14-9, while redshirt freshman Trent Nytes placed seventh with a vault of 13-5 1/4.
In the final event of the competition, Mortensen crossed the line in fourth in 2:53.83. Ziemek finished seventh in 2:55.78 to claim the heptathlon title by almost 400 points. Nytes crossed in 2:58.13 and Foss in 3:00.11 to place 10th and 11th, respectively.
The Badgers are back in action next week in New York where they will compete in the Armory Collegiate Invitational.
