Wisconsin splits action on second day of USF Showcase

         CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Wisconsin softball team split action in        doubleheader play on Saturday at the USF Under Armour Showcase, topping Seton Hall, 9-2,        but falling to Central Michigan, 3-0.
        
         With the divided result, the Badgers (8-12) moved to 2-2 in tournament action in South        Florida.
        
         Mariah        Watts pitched six innings in game one for the Cardinal and White, as the freshman        tallied five strikeouts and allowed only three hits and two runs. Wisconsin put on an        impressive offensive show against Seton Hall (7-11) and topped the Pirates, 9-2.
        
         UW recorded five stolen bases in the game, as senior Marissa        Mersch led the way with two swipes. Seven different Badgers tallied a hit and sophomore        Chloe        Miller recorded a team-high four RBI. Freshman Samantha        Arents tallied a game-high 12 putouts.
        
         Wisconsin got on the board first in game one, with Mersch making it home after hitting a        single, which gave the Badgers a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.
        
         Seton Hall responded with a two RBI homerun in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.        But the Pirates' edge didn't last long. Freshman Samantha        Arents stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the inning with freshman Kelsey        Jenkins and junior Ashley        Van Zeeland on base. Arents drilled a single to bring in Jenkins and Van Zeeland, and        put the Badgers back up on top, 3-2.
        
         Mersch then followed with a big double to bring in Arents and push UW to a 4-2 lead. Berry        hit a single to bring in Mersch, which gave the Badgers a 5-2 advantage closing out a        four-run third inning.
        
         In the fourth, senior Chloe        Miller recorded an RBI single to give the Badgers a 6-2 edge over SHU.
        
         The Badgers tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 9-2. With bases loaded,        Miller powered a double to bring in three runs and gave UW a seven-run lead. With freshman        Annie        Davis on the mound in the seventh, the Pirates recorded just one hit, which sealed UW's        victory.
        
         In game two, Wisconsin fell 3-0 to Central Michigan (3-10). The Badgers were outhit by        CMU, 8-5. Junior Taylor-Paige        Stewart pitched a complete game and tallied six strikeouts in the loss.
        
         The Chippewas got on the board early with Kristen Goodall hitting a two-run homerun over        right field to give CMU a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
        
         Central Michigan went up 3-0 in the fourth inning off of another homerun, this time from        Chelsea DeLamielleure. Neither team scored a run in the final innings, leading to a 3-0 win        for CMU.
        
         The Badgers close out USF Series play with an 8 a.m. (CT) contest against Boston College        on Sunday.
