Incoming Badger freshman earns Top in the Country score on Cambridge International Examinations Chemistry Exam
MADISON, Wis. -- With head coach Whitney Hite at the helm, the Wisconsin swimming and diving program has always placed importance not only on success in the pool, but also the success of its student-athletes in the classroom. Incoming Wisconsin swimmer Eric Geunes appears to be a perfect fit for the culture in Madison, as it was announced this December that Geunes earned a 'Top in the Country' score on the Cambridge International Examinations Chemistry Exam.
A native of Gainesville, Florida, Geunes will join the Wisconsin men's swimming team as a freshman next fall. Not only a talented swimmer, but also a top-notch scholar, Geunes is a member of Gainesville High School's Cambridge Program. The Cambridge Program is a demanding and internationally-recognized program of study for academically talented students, with Cambridge exams currently administered in about 125 nations throughout the world.
In a news release from Alachua County Public Schools, Geunes credited phenomenal teachers for much of his success on the chemistry exam and in science and math in general, which has prepared him for the next step in his education at the University of Wisconsin.
"Right now I think I'm going to major in chemical engineering, because it's something that really interests me," Geunes said in the release. "But I also like biochemistry and other applications that blend both biology and chemistry."
An Olympic trials qualifier in the 400-meter freestyle, Geuenes will head to Madison after training with the Gator Swim Club in Gainesville. A member of the Gainesville High School swim tim, Geunes finished third in the 500-yard freestyle at last year's Florida high school state championship, while also placing runner-up in the 200-yard medley relay and contributing to the title-winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
"Eric is a mid-distance to distance freestyler that comes from a really good club program," Hite said on Geuenes in UW's signing day release. "I think he's going to come in and help us in the freestyle events. He's someone that has a lot of potential."
