MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's hockey team (1-11-1) opened the New Year with an 8-1 loss to No. 5 Michigan Tech (15-4-0) at the Kohl Center Friday night.
"They took advantage of their scoring opportunities and they got the great start you always talk about as a team," UW head coach Mike Eaves said, "especially when you're on the road.
"They play at pace, they get the puck in, they win battles, they back pressure like a banshee. And they've got really good goaltending. They are a good club, and there's a reason why they are number five in the country."
| Fast Facts | | • Zulinick scored in his third consecutive game | | • Rockwood registered his third point of the season | | • Peterson made 29 saves in a relief effort | |
Wisconsin fell behind early and was unable to recover from six-straight goals by the Huskies.
Michigan Tech spread out its scoring, as it tallied three goals in both the first and second periods before adding two more in the third.
A goal by Morgan Zulinick with seven seconds remaining in the second split up the Huskies' stretch of 39:53 of shutout hockey to begin the game.
The sophomore received a perfect pass from Adam Rockwood and deked backhand-forehand to beat MTU goaltender Jamie Phillips. Grant Besse also picked up an assist on the play.
It was Zulinick's third consecutive game with a goal and he now leads the team with four tallies on the season.
After Michigan Tech got out to a three-goal lead about halfway through the first frame, Landon Peterson relieved Joel Rumpel in net.
Rumpel finished with three saves, while Peterson had 29.
Phillips saved 19 shots and Matt Wintjes, who played 7:04 in the third period, had five stops.
The Badgers showed their best hockey late in the game, moving the puck well on a power play and nearly setting up a goal following the man advantage.
Four Michigan Tech players--Tanner Kero (two goals, assist), David Johnstone (three assists), Blake Pietila (two goals, assist) and Alex Petan (one goal, two assists)--each had three points in the game.
Brad Navin led the Badgers with four shots.
Michigan Tech improved its nation-leading road record to 9-0-0 with the win. The Huskies are now unbeaten in their last five meetings against UW.
Wisconsin wraps up its series with MTU, as the puck drops at 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Kohl Center. The game can be viewed on Big Ten Network.
