Bobbie Kelsey
On her opening statement:
“We are very pleased with our win tonight, anytime you play exhibitions, you just want to get out with no injuries. That’s really what I’m thinking about. Not that these games don’t matter, but obviously we have a whole season to go and we don’t want anybody to get hurt. I’m glad the other team did not have anyone that got hurt either. When they’re smaller, it’s harder, because the posts have to guard the little ones out on the perimeter and they can all shoot. So we’re not too disappointed with that because we knew that was going to happen. But, it’s always something to pick at, and I’m going to be picking at a whole bunch of stuff. I was pleased with Dakota Whyte and Nicole Bauman, they really showed up and played well. They’re kind of a one-two punch, and we want this all the time, so we’ll see.
On her opinion of the tempo that was established in today’s game:
“You have to start somewhere. We know our conditioning is not where we want it, kind of sucking there a little bit with some of the folks, but we’ll fix that. You get stronger throughout the year as people really understand what a weapon conditioning can be. I always tell them that, but until they play, they don’t believe you sometimes. Hopefully we’ll get to pushing each other in practice and really making that a priority. You can cover a multitude of errors when you’re in shape. If you just can move a little bit quicker, you can grab the balls a little bit faster. That team, River Falls, is in shape. They were scrapping, they were hustling to the ball. They got there before we did. But that’s something to learn, for us to improve on.”
On the emphasis of three-point shots vs. working the ball in:
“Yeah, if you’re making them it’s good. I think last year we didn’t quite have the guard play. These two (Nicole Bauman and Dakota Whyte) have improved tremendously. And then Cayla, being a freshman, she still brings that quick first step. Being big inside, they really do have to collapse, and then when they close out is when we can then, so we try to tell our kids, you know attack a close-out because they’re coming at you, they can’t come at you and stop you this way, there’s no way. So when they focused on that, then we got some stuff to the basket. Nicole (Bauman) had a lot of nice little high dink passes right over the top. All the posts had to do was catch it and then go up with it. And they have to finish. We missed a lot of shots right at the rim. It’s nice to not have to depend on the threes because you can live and die by them. When you’re tired and it’s not going, you’ve got to have something else. So I’d rather start inside out. Let’s get to the rim, let’s get as close as we can, then when they collapse, that’s when you can get out. I know Tessa (Cichy) had a nice screen in for Nicole (Bauman), and she had a nice three. Jacki (Gulczynski) had a nice three. They’ll come, but you have to let them come and not force them.”

Junior G Dakota Whyte On establishing the tempo of the game: “I thought the tempo was really good. With the offense we’re running we need to have high-intensity and high-tempo. Like Coach Kelsey said, conditioning is going to be key, but with the offense we have, I think it’s a good asset to have with the tempo.”
Junior G Nicole Bauman On working the ball around instead of depending on the 3-pointers: “Obviously we had size on them so we were driving and getting the ball to the post because we had the height advantage.”
