UW Head Coach Bobbie Kelsey

Opening statement:
“We are disappointed obviously in our second half play. We should have played a lot better in that second half, I probably should have gone to the zone a little bit, but I’m thinking that if we do what we are supposed to do, we can stop some of the plays they have. But again, I’m just disappointed in our turnovers and our lack of ability to take away some of their favorite moves. All in all we started out well, and that is a good thing. We can build on that. We did come out and hit our first couple of shots, so we had them on the ropes, we just need to learn how to keep the lead and not relinquish the lead.”

On Vanderbilt switching to the zone and how that impacted the momentum of the game:
“There were times when we made a couple of passes and hit the shot and it was fine. Then we come down and try to make the home run play and turn it over. Just continue to do what you just did, which is score, and when they take that away then you look for something else. Again, it is just recognition. You have to recognize what is open and not force things that aren’t there.”

On the injury loss of Nicole Bauman and how it impacted the game:
“Nicole is a big part of what we are doing. She went down with a sprained ankle, we can’t bubble wrap them, it happens. Unfortunately, she just came down wrong. But we missed her tonight. She would have probably had 12 or 13 assists, because she just understands how to dink it right over the top. Malayna (Johnson) was open all night, and I don’t know how we missed her, but we’ll look at it. So we did miss her. But we had enough to win the game. You can’t have 18 turnovers against this group and expect to win the game against this team.”

Senior Jacki Gulczynski

On the players’ reaction as the momentum began to shift:
“I could feel the energy kind of dropping. I was trying to stay encouraging on the court and keep the energy up, because that’s really what got us going in the first four minutes of the game. The first four and last four minutes of every half are really what define a half, and you can come out and jump on teams but you have to finish strong. We gave up a layup in transition at the end of the first half, kind of giving them the momentum. And they just stole it the rest of the half. Like coach said, their zone really frustrated us, and I’m sure we are going to spend a lot of time working on that. But we are only going to improve getting the ball moving on offense, and I have no doubt that we are going to be fine.”
